Young Liberals Federal Election review: party must step up on women, climate and integrity
The Young Liberal Movement of Australia has released its submission for the review of the Liberal Party's 2022 federal election campaign.
The Young Liberals submission makes 20 findings of the 2022 election campaign covering issues including the economy, climate change, youth, integrity, women and equality.
Significant among the findings includes the failure of the Liberal Party to recruit, retain and promote women within the Party, and its failure to have any national plan or strategy to accomplish its objective to have 50% female elected members by 2025.
The submission also finds that the Morrison Government failed to take a leadership role on climate change, a significant issue to marginal and Liberal electorates.
Federal President of the Young Liberals, Clark Cooley said the election review would provide the Party with an ability to learn from the mistakes made by the Morrison Government.
”We have much to learn from the election, including our significant deficit of leadership on climate change, integrity in politics and on improving the status of women in Australia,” Mr Cooley said.
”The Liberal Party has failed to attract, retain and promote women in the Party. We have failed to have a strategy or plan to do this, and this has cost us the support of Australian women at the election.”
"This is our opportunity to take action and lead. We must take action immediately to ensure we have strong, qualified, female candidates in place. Our clear recommendation is for the Party to adopt a UK Conservative Party's A-List, and that it should include a minimum 50% women in any list of prospective candidates."
The election review is being conducted by Mr Brian Loughnane AO and Senator the Hon Jane Hume. Submissions to the review close on Friday, 5 August 2022.
